What Does a Certified Payroll Professional do?

These professionals will calculate the salaries, assign it to intended recipients, track the process, and manage all the payments credited. They’re also responsible for incorporating new employees into the system and ensure that they get their salaries on time.  A certified payroll professional will be required to keep track of the following:

  • Calculate salaries
  • Calculate deductions
  • Figure out the benefits provided to each employee
  • Keep track of vacations
  • Keep track of sick leaves
  • Calculate the taxes

Needless to say, even if the system is automated, you might need human eyes to keep track of all these calculations and ensure that employees are getting their compensations on time.

What are the Basic Responsibilities?

Like all professions, there are payroll professionals that have the skill and experience and those that have just joined in. Newcomers are usually required to get a hang of the normal administrative duties at first before they attempt to try things like auditing and enrollment of new employees.

To reach this stage, they might need to add to their education with an Associate’s degree or a certification. The CCP or the Certified Payroll Professional qualification is usually required for senior positions in this field.

The duties include everything that was mentioned in the basic responsibilities, but seasoned professionals will handle more complex tasks as well. These tasks include the following:

  • Preparing financial statements for the company
  • Compiling the tax data of a company
  • Calculating the employee salary data
  • Training new payroll employees
  • And managing a team of payroll employees

These duties are infinitely more complex and require the skills and experience to handle without making too many mistakes. If a certified payroll professional does make a mistake, it can impact the company and disorganize it for a while.

The Certifications

The highest authority in this field is the American Payroll Association that offers certifications and tests for professionals in this field. The two certifications offered are stated below:

  • The FPC or the Fundamental Payroll Certification for entry level and mildly experienced professionals.
  • The CPP or the Certified Payroll Professional that is a more advanced certification and requires some knowledge and experience in the field.
